Abstract

A multi-medical society panel has developed and endorsed a uniform lexicon for describing ultrasound observations during the first trimester of pregnancy. The lexicon, published in Radiology and the American Journal of Obstetrics & Gynecology, addresses terms frequently used in first trimester ultrasound reports. The panel, which included various medical societies, worked for a year and a half to reach a consensus on the language. The lexicon recommends clear, specific, and scientifically based terminology that minimizes bias and harm, respects patient preferences, and communicates clearly across disciplines.
