Abstract

A report from Umea University in Sweden discusses research findings on breast cancer screening. The study analyzed the expression of type I collagen mRNA and protein in breast cancer patients and found that low levels of type I collagen are associated with more aggressive breast cancer and predict a response to adjuvant chemotherapy. The study also found that high expression of type I collagen is associated with better overall survival and breast cancer-specific survival in patients not receiving chemotherapy, but the opposite was observed in patients receiving chemotherapy. The researchers suggest that stromal type I collagen may be a predictor of chemotherapy response. [Extracted from the article]
