Abstract

A recent study from the Regional Cancer Center in Kerala, India, has focused on lingual thyroid, a rare condition where the thyroid gland fails to descend to its normal location during embryogenesis. The researchers found that lingual thyroid can be challenging for anesthesiologists due to difficulties in securing the airway. Symptoms of lingual thyroid can include dysphagia, dysphonia, upper airway obstruction, or hemorrhage. The study recommends preoperative airway evaluation and indirect laryngoscopy to determine the need for fiber optic bronchoscopy-guided intubation. The full article can be accessed for free online.
