Abstract

A patent application has been submitted for a ventricular assist device with an impeller-stabilizing spring. The device is designed to assist and unload cardiac chambers in patients with a failing heart or those at risk during coronary interventions. The motion-cushioning spring acts as a shock absorber, providing cushioning to the axial back-and-forth motion of the impeller. The device also includes a distal thrust bearing to prevent axial motion of the impeller in response to pressure variations. An elastomeric material can be coupled to the motion-cushioning spring to reduce the risk of thrombi and hemolysis. The patent application provides further details and claims for the apparatus.
