Abstract

A study conducted at Manipal Academy of Higher Education in Karnataka, India, focused on developing a disposable paper-based thin film solid-phase microextraction sampling kit to quantify ketone bodies for diabetes research. The study aimed to improve the detection of beta-hydroxybutyric acid (BHB) ketone bodies in diabetes ketoacidosis (DKA) by utilizing a cost-effective paper-based patch coupled with gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. The research demonstrated the feasibility of using these paper-based patches as a sampling kit for screening DKA, offering a simpler and more efficient alternative to traditional sample preparation methods. The study was supported by the Research Society for the Study of Diabetes in India and can be further explored in the journal RSC Advances. [Extracted from the article]
