Abstract

The article discusses the association between the use of Glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists (GLP-1 RAs) and perioperative aspiration risk. A systematic review and meta-analysis of 25 observational studies found that while GLP-1 RA exposure was not associated with pulmonary aspiration, it was positively associated with residual gastric contents in fasted patients. The evidence suggests that patients using GLP-1RAs may have a heightened risk of presenting to surgery with residual gastric contents, but further research is needed to evaluate the risks and benefits of managing these medications during the perioperative period.
