Abstract
- A recent study conducted in the Peruvian Amazon by researchers at the University of Virginia aimed to determine the prevalence of acute febrile illness (AFI) caused by primary Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) infection. The study found that while EBV DNA was present in both febrile cases and afebrile controls, it was not correlated with classic infectious mononucleosis (IM) symptoms. The research concluded that IM due to primary EBV infection was not a significant cause of AFI in the Peruvian Amazon, despite initial high rates of test positivity.
