Abstract

A recent study conducted by researchers at the University of South Africa focused on assessing the status of carotid intima-media thickness and lipid profiles in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). The study, which included data from 57 studies with a sample size of 29,502 individuals, found that patients with T2DM had significantly higher carotid intima-media thickness, elevated triglycerides, total cholesterol, and low-density lipoprotein-cholesterol, and decreased high-density lipoprotein cholesterol compared to those without T2DM. Factors such as age, body mass index, and hypertension were associated with these lipid profile changes in patients with T2DM. [Extracted from the article]
