Abstract

Researchers from Pontifical University Javeriana in Colombia conducted a 20-year study on postoperative outcomes after splenectomy, focusing on infectious complications and life-threatening conditions that may arise. The study included 134 patients, with trauma being the most common indication for splenectomy. The research found that overwhelming post-splenectomy syndrome (OPSI) occurred in a small percentage of patients, and surgical characteristics varied between open and laparoscopic approaches. The findings provide valuable insights for future research and management strategies in this population. [Extracted from the article]
