Abstract

A recent study conducted by researchers at the University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Foundation Trust in the United Kingdom focused on the cost-utility analysis of embedding structured self-management education for individuals with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) into routine practice compared to usual care. The study found that the estimated cost of the intervention was GBP 40,316 across study sites, with a mean per patient incremental quality-adjusted life-year (QALY) estimate of 0.006, resulting in an incremental cost-effectiveness ratio of GBP 8311 per QALY gained. Despite the effectiveness of the Embedding packages being impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic, the study suggests that while implementation initiatives can be cost-effective for this patient population, further evidence or incentivization may be needed before widespread adoption is recommended.
