Abstract

The article cites a study which discusses Brazil's response to the problem of AIDS. In 1992, members of Brazil's National Commission on HIV/AIDS, including actors from government institutions, NGOs and universities, co-authored a letter of intent to the World Bank, asking for a grant for the purpose of strengthening their AIDS program. The World Bank lent a huge sum of money that helped Brazil achieve an increase in life expectancy for those living with HIV by 12 times. Moreover, statistics reveal that only half of the predicted cases of HIV have even appeared, due to successful prevention measures.
