Abstract

Since the Philippines had embarked on a labor export policy/program mainly to deal with its debt crisis, there has been an unprecedented increase in Filipino overseas migration. Of the more than 6 million Filipino migrants spread out in more than 150 countries, majority are women who work as domestic workers. The globalization of labor has created transnational spaces of resistance as these migrants experience exploitation and human rights violations. With data gathered through fieldwork in Hong Kong and qualitatively analyzed, this paper examines the different froms of resistance of Filipino domestic workers in Hong Kong and how they inform some grand conceptualizations about globalization and migrants.
