Abstract

The article looks at how French Interior Minister Nicolas Sarkozy has responded to the recent widespread rioting and vandalism in France. The author suggest that the country's minority populations are racked by endemic violence, petty delinquency, drug trafficking, joblessness and a sense of exclusion. Sarkozy has reacted to violence by calling the demonstrators "scum." It is inferred that Sarkozy's statement personalized the confrontation and caused him to lose any chance of enlisting the support of the older silent majority.
