The article emphasizes the importance of leadership among exercise physiologists. In order for credibility to exist within the profession, certain key elements should be included. The main element is leadership. In the absence of a leader, followers have no common visions for their goals. The American Society of Exercise Physiologists was founded in 1997 and there is some sense that it is at a standstill regarding professionalism. Several important elements of leadership are outlined to help with the understanding of the importance of professional development of exercise physiology.
