Abstract

The article presents information on the plans of State University of New York and City University of New York to raise standards in high schools of New York City and discusses the possible implications of these actions to community colleges. According to the plan, students will have to pass an English Regent Examination to complete their graduation and five Regents to earn a diploma. Though this proves that education is being given its due credit but it may have a detrimental impact on students. The students who are not able to pass the regents may get frustrated, drop out and join community colleges which are open admission institutions, thereby making them overcrowded. This will hinder skill development of students and directly affect English instruction in community colleges. The students at community colleges may also have to go through intensive remediation program, as they will have only one year to complete any college-preparatory work.
