The article describes the ways in which the Peruvian ironclad Huáascar distracted the Chilean nitrate trade and invasion plans during the War of the Pacific from 1879 to 1884. The ironclad was commanded by Peruvian naval officer Miguel Grau Seminario who used stealth and guile to terrorize the Pacific Coast for several months.
