Abstract

The article presents a discussion on the Portuguese population in Hawaii. It cites the best known and most important Portuguese in Hawaii named João Eliot de Castro, a native of Portugal who became physician to Kamehameha in 1812. The Portuguese were considered as among the most industrious people working as farmers or dairymen, or serving in plantations and ranches. A typical representative of the pre-1878 group was Antone Rosa, Sr. who arrived on a whaling ship in 1852. The migration of Portuguese in Hawaii was implemented by Dr. William Hillebrand.
