Abstract

The article discusses the powerful role played by Shiite leader Moqtada al-Sadr in Iraq. Sadr's Mahdi Army is a killing presence in Baghdad, and Sadr himself is compared to a popular Mafia Don who can wage political or actual war any time he chooses. He embodies what the author says the Americans have long misread: religious sentiment, economic resentment, and sectarian passions.
