Abstract

The article describes the relationship between district geothermal energy systems and green building initiatives in the U.S. District energy systems make use of waste heat from electric power production and cogeneration of electric power and heat, as well as renewable energy sources. There is potential for supplying single-family dwellings and commercial buildings with district energy. Steam, hot water, and chilled water are centrally produced and then distributed to multiple buildings through insulated pipes.
