Abstract
- The article announces that San Francisco, California has become the first city in the U.S. to ban large stores from giving customers regular plastic bags. Instead, stores can provide paper bags or biodegradable plastic bags. San Franciscans use a lot of plastic bags--more than 180 million a year, according to the city. Before deciding to ban plastic bags, the city tried programs to recycle them, but those efforts were unsuccessful.
