Abstract

The article cites the best practices common to top schools in teaching math and literacy to English-language learners (ELLs) in California, identified by the research team led by Trish Williams after analyzing California Academic Performance Index scores for ELLs at 237 elementary schools with high proportions of limited English proficient students. Those top schools use assessment data, provide good teachers and resources, implement state standards-based curricula, and set high, measurable student goals. INSET: Demanding success.
