Abstract

The article focuses on the role of arts in cognition. The author stated that artistic cognition, including aesthetic cognition, rest in a profound manner upon polysemy, the entertaining of two or more meanings for a lone symbol or object. Moreover, a somewhat belittling manner of pertaining to polysemy is as ambiguity. He further posited that polysemy is not in equal standing relative to ambiguity. He also forwarded that in the arts, it is the multitude of levels of meaning and their interactions that are essential.
