Abstract

On the anniversaries of the death of Philip II (1527-98) of Spain and the birth of his father, Charles V (1500-58), all of the 16th-century jewels in which the images of these kings appear have been examined. In addition to a discussion of cameos, miniatures, and other types of portraits in enameled gold, the author considers the paintings in which they are frequently depicted, as well as selected documents.
