Abstract
- The article discusses the attack suffered by animal lover Jeanna Giese, 18, who picked up a downed bat and was bitten while taking it outdoors. Within a month, Giese was suffering from double vision and vomiting spells, and discovered that she had rabies. The disease attacked her central nervous system, and doctors decided to put her into a induced coma and administer antibiotics. By the time the bat bite was discovered, giving her the rabies vaccine was useless.
