Abstract

The article discusses the influence of digital rights management (DRM) on digital music. For musicians and record companies, DRM is a method for protecting copyrighted music, but for consumers, DRM means restriction on how they use the music. Record companies began strengthening their DRM in response to the proliferation of downloaded music files using peer-to-peer (P2P) software. According to Tiversa, a company that monitors file-sharing activity, an estimated 12 million people globally use P2P networks at any given time, and 450 million copies of P2P software have been downloaded.
