Abstract

Abstract: The study investigates the role of the University of Witwatersrand (Wits) in the field of nanotechnology, with special focus on the experiences and challenges faced by Wits. Wits has responded to the South African National Nanotechnology Strategy which aimed at ensuring that South Africa is ready to optimally use Nanotechnology to enhance its global competitiveness and sustainable economic growth. The study reveals that Wits has provided research and educational opportunities in the field of nanotechnology. The study however shows that Wits faces the quantitative challenge of an inadequate number of Schools that are involved in nanotechnology activities. This study therefore adds to the global discussion on the role of the University in the field of nanotechnology. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]
