Abstract

The article presents a historical survey of the scarf, as a long cover or ornamental cloth for a bureau or table. Other dictionary definitions of scarf are also provided. Widely used during the 16th century, the term is derived from the Old Norman French word "escarpe," which means slash or sling. It is also derived from the Old French "escharpe" or "escreppe." Information is presented on the different functions, types and materials used in making a scarf. The use of a scarf for military identification is also noted.
