Abstract
- The article reports on the emergence of the Graphical Processing Unit (GPU) technology intended to improve speed beyond that possible on the central processing unit (CPU) of personal computers. The technology is also referred to as the processor on the graphics cards. The gaming industry is cited as one of the factors which contributed to the evolution of the technology. Two principal reasons why the GPU technology only recently has become available for image processing are also cited.
