Abstract

The article highlights the importance of social action in Buddhism. According to Buddhist teacher Suzuki Roshi, the way to solve the problems in the West is by action outside of the self. Many Buddhist centers have already included ways of helping others as part of their activity. There are people working in the hospice movement, in prisons and with the homeless and AIDS patients. Thich Nhat Hanh, a Vietnamese teacher, started working with traumatized American Vietnam veterans.
