Abstract

Chapter 1 of the book "Return to the River: Restoring Salmon to the Columbia River" is presented. It focuses on salmon problem in the Columbia River. The arrival of Meriwether Lewis, William Clark and the other members of the Corps of Discovery in the Columbia and Snake Rivers coincided with the arrival of large numbers of salmon returning to the river on their annual spawning migration. Salmon became the object of an intense commercial fishery in the Columbia River in the latter part of the 19th century.
