Abstract

PURPOSE: To investigate the relationship between the protrusion and the orbital volume using Hertel curve in the fresh cadavers. METHODS: An inflatable balloon was inserted between the periorbita and orbital floor in 5 fresh human cadavers. Hertel measurements were taken for each millimeter over a total 7ml volume increment. Eighty data points were achieved and analyzed statistically using SAS6.12 software package. RESULTS: There was a high linear correlation between the protrusion and the orbital volume using Hertel curve in the fresh cadavers Y=8.57-0.96X (r=-0.86, P=0.0001⩽0.05). CONCLUSIONS: The inflatable balloon is an effective instrument for measuring the orbital volume. There is a linear relation between the protrusion and the orbital volume increments.
