Abstract

The article discusses a selection of 18 early 19th-century ephemera from Germany, Austria, and Switzerland held in the Print Room of The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. The article divides the ephemera into three groups including: printed papers used in conjunction with other objects; useful paper objects bound to wear out; and ephemera saved only temporarily for sentimental reasons. Several highlights of ephemera in the Print Room include Francesco Rosselli's engraved circles, Stefano della Bella's etched playing cards, and 18th-century invitations and tickets.
