Abstract
- The article explores English author Walter Pater's essays on the Greek mythological figure Dionysus such as "The Bacchanals of Euripides," "A Study of Dionysus," and the imaginary portrait "Denys l'Auxerrois" and discusses what they reveal about the Greek imagination. It compares the aesthetics of Pater with those of his contemporaries, specifically his reaction to a statue of Bacchus produced by artist Michelangelo that he favored and others disapproved. The article also discusses the similarities between Pater and the philosophy of German philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche.
