Abstract

The article reports on the reasons for re-enlisting in the U.S. Navy in 2008. According to Navy officials, high retention may lead to tight competition for existing bonuses and promotion slots. James Koseak, military manpower analyst for Rand Corp., mentioned that military pay is currently in good position with respect to civilian salary. Another reason why troops opt to stay is the promise of being able to transfer some benefits to family members in return for extending their service for a certain number of years.
