Abstract

This article examines how language displacement contributed to the cultural and ethnic assimilation of a wave of Czechs and Moravians who immigrated to Texas, the United States, beginning in the 19th century and continuing until the First World War. This ethnic group preserved its traditional ethnic and cultural values, as well as its language until the post-World War II era and the advent of the television. By the beginning of the 21st century, an almost complete linguistic and ethnic assimilation had taken place. Only in a few religious rites and services is literary Czech still used on some occasions.
