Abstract

An encyclopedia entry for "Peru" is presented. It offers information on the 19th- and 20th-century prose and poetry in Peru. Neoclassicism remained the dominant literary mode during the period and the leading intellectual figure of the age was Felipe Pardo y Aliaga. The emergent middle classes increasingly dominated the literary scene, with Manuel Ascensio Segura creating a national theatre of quality with a corpus of thirteen plays.
