Abstract

This paper examines Goffman and Garfinkel's relationship to determine in what way Goffman came, by some, to be considered an ethnomethodologist. Although he had conversation analysts, such as Sacks, Schegloff and Sudnow in his classes and read their work, he directly criticized it and did not consider it a model to follow.Goffman developed his own approach in sociology as did Garfinkel and although they were familiar with each other and with the work that each was doing, Goffman rarely commented directly on such work. Some exceptions are cited and quoted, including both Goffman and Garfinkel, to show the extent of their acquaintance and familiarity. My conclusion about the lack of intersection or overlap of their work is based on the analysis of their works and their writings about one another's approach.
