Abstract

Information about consumerism, defined as a devotion to the acquisition of material goods which are not necessary for subsistence is presented. The practice, which dates back to the seventeenth century in Western Europe, has grown increasingly in recent times, with the U.S. as the leading consumer nation. The U.S. has taken the lead in global consumerism and has established a taste-maker with its national fashions defining global trends.
