The author presents some of the most recent analysis of Japanese New Religious Movements (JNRMs) in the perspective of sociology and anthropology of religions. The paper discusses selected contributions of authors undertaking scientific reflection with reference to that phenomenon. General tendencies in social research on JNRMs were presented and differences between approaches discussed in order to suggest a new approach base on a more strict case-study-based research on 'spirituality' instead of the reference to other categories as 'sect' or 'new religion'.
