Abstract

The article discusses a ten-year cohort study which was conducted to determine the applicability of lipid treatment guidelines to aboriginal people with risk of cardiovascular diseases in Central Australia. The discrepancy in cardiovascular diseases (CVD) between indigenous and the wider Australian population is likely due to factors such as social, environmental, behavioral and biological determinants. The Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme lipid treatment criteria identify a group with very high risk of CVD in which global risk assessment is recommended.
