Abstract

The article studies the human body, its meanings, and the aspects of the social environment which may contribute to anorexia. In particular, it examines the case of a male anorexic from a sociological and psychoanalytical perspective. It suggests that anorexia may, in some cases, originate from a survival instinct rooted in the need to please others. The article describes the life of the subject based on notes taken during numerous encounters with him. It suggests that the subject's anorexia may be the effect of social phenomena, may reflect psychotic tendencies, and may serve as a form of self-affirmation.
