Abstract

The article discusses a study which identified the prescription pattern and safety profile for irreversible monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOI) in older adults in Canada. The study explored the prevalence and incidence of irreversible MAOI use and the frequency of coprescribing MAOI with contraindicated medications between January 1, 1997 and April 14, 2007. It found that MAOI are underprescribed and underutilized in patients with atypical depression and treatment-refractory depression.
