Abstract
- Chapter 18 of the book "Lancaster: The Biography" is presented. It relates the participation of the 617 Squadron of the Royal Air Force in the campaign to target the German battleship Tirpitz. The pilots were told to fly to a base in Russia where they landed near Onega. By that time two Lancaster planes were lost before they began the attack. The location of the Tirpitz is protected by a cliff. It has torpedo nets and smoke generators to ward off air and sea attacks. One of the bomber planes hit the ship in the bow and nearly sank in the attack.
