Abstract
- By ordering postwar Japanese historical scholarship on the “Rikkokushi,” (Six National Histories) chronologically, summarizing the current status of scholarship, and suggesting new approaches for study, this article aims to broaden the scope on the subject and heighten the possibilities for further research. The “Six National Histories” is a collection of six histories originally compiled in either the Nara or the Heian period and comprising dynastic histories up to the year 887. After categorizing postwar historiography into five periods (1940s-60s, 1970s, 1980s, 1990s, and 2000s), the article divides it into stages and looks at future prospects for study.
