Abstract

The article focuses on the palm kernel feeding programme implemented by dairy farmers Kerry and Megan Chestnut in Northland, New Zealand. The original purpose of the programme is to contain farm working expenses at 2.70 dollars/kilogram (kg) milksolids (MS). Feeding cows high levels of palm kernel during a drought has been very profitable compared with low supplementation and drying off thin cows. As the payout began to rise Kerry reintroduced more repairs and maintenance.
