Abstract

The article reports on the debate over the elimination of the Elwha and Glines Canyon dams which revived tales of the Elwha River's legendary 100-pound salmon. The two dams are expected to be gone by late 2014 under the 1992 Elwha Act which mandates their removal. It is expected that the river will be replenished to its pre-dam level with five species of Pacific salmon by 2039. According to fisheries biologist Brian Winter, since the erection of the two dams, salmon fishes struggle to get upstream.
