Abstract

The author analyzes the relationship between the opposition to a Muslim cultural facility proposed by Cordoba House at the Ground Zero in New York City and aversion to mosques elsewhere in the U.S. He comments on the unexpected opposition of conservative politicians and religious leaders to the plans for mosques across the country. He explains why it is false to draw an imaginary line between the idea that a Muslim presence is acceptable, but just not at Ground Zero, and the idea that their presence is just plain unacceptable.
