Abstract

The article discusses how the use of the GSL Linear Programming Model is benefiting several dairy farmers in New Zealand. It outlines the uses of the model for farmers, including showing how a farmer can get the most milk from the least amount of inputs, and telling a farmer if it will be beneficial to build a feedpad, extend the season to pick up milk, or drop to once-a-day (OAD) milking. Federated Farmers Dairy chair Lachlan McKenzie relates that the model allows him to understand the complexities of a biologically based farming system.
