Abstract

The article presents a discussion of the work of Romare Bearden, a 20th century African American artist. It focuses on the relationship of his work to the theater, film, and dance. Bearden's collage "Conjur: A Masked Folk Ballet (Harlequin)" is reproduced, and his collaborations with the Alvin Ailey dance company are described. Bearden's sketches of set designs for various shows are discussed, and it is noted that he contributed the watercolors which were used in the titles of the film "Gloria," directed by John Cassavetes.
