Abstract

The article focuses on the significance of the marine microorganisms in the chemical cycling processes in the ocean, as well as its impact on the global climate. It says that the ocean's sulfur cycle is one of the major chemical cycle that marine microbes play an important function, in which the its role is centered on the dimethylsulfoniopropionate (DMSP), sulfur compound produced phytoplankton and plant species. It states that other bacteria reduces DMSP, in which another compound is being released called dimethyl sulfide (DMS) which is a crucial component in the global sulfur cycle. Moreover, a study has been conducted which examines the role of DMSP in the marine microbial food web, in which the experiment indicates that DMSP and DMS are important chemical signals for marine microbes.
